Nicole Shering continued her good form this summer with a second win of the weekend taking the Ipswich Vikings Club National. Lauren Vale recovered from a mistake on the first run to take second overall with Hannah Burroughs taking third after Megan Skipper was disqualified on the third run. Ellie Jackson and Lily Martin rounded out the top five finishers in the girls race.
Shering was in dominant form on the first run and carved out a lead over Megan Skipper of eight tenths of a second as Lauren Vale struggled and was over five-seconds off the pace. Burroughs was in third just behind Skipper with Lily Martin, Ellie Jackson and Abby Holmes all within a tenth of a second of each other providing some great competition.
Run two saw Shering smacked in the face by a gate and this knocked her helmet ruining her vision and she skied out. Vale used the run to storm back into contention and jumped into second place with a much improved run to be 0.18 ahead of Skipper. Burroughs could not improve on her first run time and Jackson and Martin swapped places as Jackson was one of few racers to improve their time on the second run.
Course setting had caused great interest and after a number of minor alterations, the interesting set gave the racers plenty to think about in terms of speed generation and quick feet. With three runs down the same course, Shering and Burroughs were the only racers in the top ten not to improve on their first run times.
Run three saw little movement on the overall placings after the second run. Megan Skipper’s disqualification giving all those behind her a one place jump. Shering, while she posted the fastest run time on the third run, skied well within herself perhaps being wary of knocking her helmet again as she had done in the first run. Shering finished two hundredths ahead of Vale on the second run with Ellie Jackson putting in a much improved third run to show more of what she is capable of. Burroughs still held on to third place.
Shering from the Snowtrax Club in Christchurch continues to set the pace on the dry mat scene with Vale chasing at her heals. Ellie Jackson and Lily Martin, in the Under 16 age group will learn from the older racers but Shering knows tougher challenges lie ahead.
The age group wins were taken by Emma Trust (Under 14, 8th Overall), Ellie Jackson (Under 16, 4th Overall); Nicole Shering (Under 18, Race Winner); Jessica Tubbs (Under 21, 6th Overall) and Melissa Sampson (Masters, 20th Overall).
