FIS debut goes well in Australia for Middleton and Vinter

It may have been a baptism of fire for young Scottish racers Fraser Middleton and Zak Vinter, but their first FIS races of their career saw them put in some promising results. Having headed off to train and race with the EDEP set up in Perisher at the end of July, the small yet quality fields that Australian races attract, plus the coaching from EDEP have appealed to these two racers. …

Zak Vinter & Fraser Middleton both in the Delancey British U18 team, now training under the guidance of EDEP and training with Perisher winter sports club in Australia competed in the fist races of the 2014/15 season. Both had cautious starts on the first day, however Middleton’s consistent skiing placed him 4th overall and 1st u18. It was day 2 that both athletes raised their game and Vinter finished with an 81 point result and Middleton 85. Both athletes are training along side Australian number 1 Ross Peraudo and they said ” Ross is the role model we need on and off the hill. He pushes the boundaries everyday and we try to keep up. The training and variety of pistes we are training on are some of the best in the world”

The first race was won by Austrian Europa Cup race winner, Marc Digruber with another  Austrian, Matthias Tippelreither, edging out Ross Peraudo in the second race.

Next week both boys will compete on their Australian home training hill at Perisher in the Australian Championships. Other first year performances to look at were Australian female Zali offord. A solid 88 point result and 3rd overall.

Coach and programme director Stephen Edwards, said these races were one of the toughest. This years race was run on men’s downhill in Mt Buller, one of the steepest slalom hills in the southern hemisphere! They hose piped the steep bluff section and in some parts there was no visibility. It was a credit to the boys to ski like they did. Edwards now has 3 of the british u18 team and one from the u21 team ready to train together. These boys will train alongside the Peraudo brothers and other members of the Australian team.
